Revision Knee Replacement Surgery
Total Knee Replacement is one of the most successful Orthopaedic
procedures of this century. This form of surgery provides relief to the
patient from pain, restores knee function and improves quality of life. With
improved implant designs and surgical techniques, a primary KneeReplacement
can be expected to function for at least 15 to 20 years.
However, in some cases, these procedures may fail and require a second
surgery called Revision Knee Replacement.
Revision Knee Replacement is a procedure where previously failed
primary implants are removed and a new prosthetic implant is fixed. This
is a complex procedure and requires planning, special operative tools and
Very often, there are bone deficiencies that are to be addressed during
Revision Knee Surgery for which bone grafts of various types and wedges
made up of trabecular metal are used. There are various reasons for a failed
implant. Some of these are wear of prosthetic part over time, loosening of
prosthesis, infection, fracture around the prosthesis, instability and
various patient related factors.
Fractures around the prosthesis may occur after an accidental fall or other
injury around the knee which may loosen the implant requiring revision
surgery. Most Revision Total Knee Replacement Surgery takes longer to
perform than primary procedures (2-3 hours). The first step is to remove
old implants and fill up bony defects by bone grafts or bone substitutes.
Post-operative care after Revision Knee Replacement is similar to the care
of a primary knee procedure. This includes combination of physical
therapy, blood management and pain medications as necessary.
Antibiotics and some method of blood clot prevention will continue in postoperative
phase. A brace or a splint may be used to protect the joint after
