Kurdistan man gets artificial heart implant
NEW DELHI, July 30, 2015
Doctors at the BLK Super Speciality Hospital here conducted a successful artificial heart implant on Karwan Ghafour Mohammed, a 32-year-old business man from Kurdistan.

Dr. Ajay Kaul, Chairman and HoD of the Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the hospital, and his team performed the surgery on July 15 as part of which a Left Ventricular Assistive Device (LVAD) was implanted.

“Mohammed came to us with terminal heart condition (cardiomyopathy). We found that he his heart muscle was very weak and it couldn’t eject blood. Also in such cases there is no treatment possible.”

Doctors claim the patient’s condition was such that he could not walk even a few steps.

He was waiting for an implant, which was becoming difficult due to shortage of donors. Mohammed was told that an artificial heart could be implanted, which would improve his chances of survival and keep him alive till a heart was available.

“Even if a heart is not available, he can survive for 10 years on this machine,” said Dr. Kaul.

Till some time ago, for terminal heart failure patients, heart implant was the only treatment. However, the acute shortage of donors made it difficult — only two such implants took place in the last six months in north India.
