Ayurveda is the most ancient science & traditional system of healing continuing till today in the world. Ayurveda originated as a part of VEDIC science dates back to VEDIC period about 5000 years ago. It is considered as 5th VEDA or rather an 'Upveda of ATHARVEDA'. The word Ayurved is made up of 2 components 'Ayu' which means life & 'VEDA' means knowledge or science, therefore Ayurveda is Science of life, ie LIFE SCIENCE. Ayurved is not only a system of medicine but it is a complete Philosophy of life.
Ayurveda is based on Samkhya philosophy of creation, the meaning of samkhya is to know the truth, Truth is being, pure existence i.e. the source of all life. So Ayurved is the science of truth as it is expressed in life. The Rishi’s discovered truth by religious practices & disciplines. They manifested truth in their daily life through intensive meditation. They perceived how cosmic energy manifests in all living and non living things & there is close relationship between man & the Universe & the source of all existence is cosmic consciousness.
Basic Principles Of Ayurveda
According to ayurvedic philosophy, all the living & non-living matters are made up of five basic elements in various proportions, they are AKASH (Ether), VAYU (Air), TEJA (Fire), JAL (Water), PRITHVI (Earth) and Even the human body is made up of these elements known collectively as PANCHTATVA or PANCH MAHA BHUTAS. According to Ayurveda again, all the physiological functions of the body are governed by three Bio Logical Units namely VATA, PITTA & KAFA. Each of which in turn is made up of PANCHBUTAS. Physiologically, these three doshas are responsible for various specific functions in the body.
VATA is responsible for all voluntary & involuntary movements in the human body PITTA is responsible for all digestive & metabolic activities. KAFA provides the static energy (Strength) for holding body tissue together. It also provides lubricants at the various points. It gives support & bulk of body tissue.
When these DOSHAS are in normal state of functioning it is health & when they loose their Equilibrium and get vitiated by various internal and external factors. They produce varied diseases in the human body. Hence Ayurvedic treatment of any disease is aimed at restoring the equilibrium of these three doshas.
